Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1919. TREE PLANTING ON THE COAST.

THE Deeemher number of the l.)istriei Land Register and Property Gazette, published by Messrs C. A. Preeee and Co., of .Palmerston N., contains a reference to the necessity of the authorities taking steps to plant the sand dunes extending from Paekakariki to Patea, on (lie west coast of the North Island, with suitable forest trees for the purpose of preventing the sand from encroaching on good laud, and reclaiming land that is taken possession of hy the sand, and urging that no time should he lo>l in taking the work in hand. The Gazette continues: “In the near future wo shall have to provide work for a very large number of returned soldiers, and this work would bo very suitable for men who could not under-, take very hard labour. We would call the attention of Members of Parliament for the coastal districts to this important mailer in order that they may bring it to the attenion of the authorities to take immediate action. We are pleased to stale that, since the* above was in press, we have noticed that the Government have placed a substantial sum on the Estimates for the development of forests in the Dominion, and we have no doubt that a portion of this sum will be available for the work mentioned by it*.” The

planting of the sand dunes along this coast is an important matter (comments • the Levin Chronicle), and if taken iii hand must mean the saving of' much valuable property from encroachment by sand and the providing of a supply of timber for fencing and oilier purposes. This is a subject that might be very well taken up by the Farmers'’ Union, and no time is more opportune than at the present when reorganising is in hand throughout this disiriel. With the support of the farming community, the value of the scheme should commend itself more than ever to the favourable consi ( dera(ion of the Government.
