SHORTAGE OF COAL.

Wellington, Jan. 7. The Railway Department has never been so short of coal as it is 10-day. The hold-up of steamers at Newcastle has cut off many thousands of tons, which Hie Department hah hoped to receive during the past two months. Al the same time the New Zealand out put has been far below normal by reason of the stoppage of operations during Hie epidemic for about three weeks, and the Christmas holidays, for about a fortnight. It is expected that unless Hie coal supply improves quickly-Hie Department will be obliged lo make sumo cals in the train services.
