SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the above w*as held last night. Present: Messrs ITornblow, Claris, Marlin, W. Signal, Perreau, Baildon and F. "Woods. Formal correspondence was read from the Board and received. A petition signed by a number of local residents, contributors to the School Fair funds, was received, asking the Committee to reconsider its action in purchasing a German-made piano for the school. Mr Perreau moved, and Mr Woods seconded, (hat the retpiest of the petitioners be acceded to. The Chairman said that the Committee had already settled this matter, but in order to further test the feeling of the meeting under the circumstances he would accept the motion without notice. Mr Martin moved an amendment, seconded by Mr Signal, that the petition be received, and that the Committee stand by its former resolution. He stated that a number of those who signed the petition did not know what they were signing, and that several had signed it in a spirit of vindictiveness and spite. Mr Signal said he refused to be dictated to by the head teacher and one or two exmembers of the Committee after the Committee had threshed . out the matter. Mr Perreau said that the owner's offer to sell the piano to the Committee was not definite. The owner asked that the sale be held over until the school was erected. The Secretary explained that the Committee bad written consenting to buy the instrument, and the letter received was in reply. The amendment was carried, those voting for it being the Chairman, Messrs Claris, Signal, Baildon, Marlin; againsl, Messrs Perreau and Woods. The Secretary was instructed to write to (he owner of the piano, asking whether the offer still held. The Secretary presented the annual statement of receipts and expenditure, which was received, and Mr F. I). Whibley was appointed (o audit same. The letter forwarded to the head teacher was read. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting rose.
