A book purchased for fourpenee in Earringdon Road, London, was found to contain a £5 note and two shillingsworth of stamps. During last year alone wo built behind our lines, in France, 000 miles of broad-gauge railway, and over 1,000 miles of light railway. Proposals are under consideration at Birmingham for the establishment in different parts of the city of entertainments for the education and instruction of children. New York in 1917 yielded more than £100,000,000 in income-tax ami excess profit tax. In 1910 the total was £18,000,000. A recent report of British experts favours absolute abstonanee from strong drink, but supports the use of light wines and li<juors, A handbook showing the deposit of £4,000 was found among the effects of a workman who died suddenly in a Newark, N.J., rooming house.
An altar of iec was used recently at an outdoor service of the Church of St. Peter and Paul, Auburn, Now York. The service was held for the purpose of demonstrating that a fuel is unessential in connection with worship. The service also included baptismal rites. The boatswain, or hoVn, as he is colloquially and nautieally called, was once a body servant. Now he is the subordinate officer in charge of (he rigging, anchors, cables, and cordage, and he summons the crew for evolutions with his whistle, and assists the executive officer. “France’s Gratitude” is the name of a new medal .struck by the French Government. It was created for presentation to the Queen of the Belgians as a slight token of France’s gratefulness for the tremendous service done to humanity by Belgium in 1914.
