BRITAIN AND AMERICA.

A PROPHECY FULFILLED

A prophecy by the late Mr Choate, formerly American Ambassador, which has been abundantly fulfilled by the experience of the war, was recalled by Mr Valter Long, Colonial Secretary, in a speech at the American Officers’ Club in London recentlv.

“I am unite confident,” be told .Mr Long, “Unit there will never he what we (-all an alliance between us and England; it is contrary to our traditions; but you may rely upon it that, if ever —which Cod forbid —England finds herself in a real difficulty, my countrymen will come to her aid and stand by her to the end.”.

Air Long drew a comparison between the British Empire and (he Ended .Stales. “We are a union of nations or colonies; yon a anion of great Stales," said the Colonial Secretary. “We are under an hereditary monarchy, which is the form of government which suits ns host; yon are governed by a President and a Republic, The boundaries which divide your Stales are on. land, where as ours are on the sea. But surely these differences are only differences of detail and not of principle. In our blood, in our ideals, in onr methods, we arc singularly alike, and 1 firmly believe that the result of ibis close intercourse, not only on the field of battle, but here in this country, will lead to (he removal of any causes of misunderstanding or disagreement Which may have existed in past days, and enable ns to work together on parallel linos for the peace of (he world.”
