POSSIBLE REDUCTIONS
CHRISTCHURCH OPINIONS
Christchurch, Sunday
The general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company/.Air A. \V. Bennett, has not received any in forma (ion ay 1.0 redneed freight,s on American vessels, hut said yesterday (hat the Chicago Tribune’s statement entiled last week was probably correct, as recent movements in regard to shipping arrangements had pointed to the fact that the United Stales and Great Britain did not intend to compete with each other in freights. A reduction of 25 per cent, was announced in the British rates a few weeks ago. Mr J. J. Kinsey, chairman of the Oversea Shipping Committee, stated yesterday that although he had had no news of the reduction, (here was reason to believe that it would be made. He believed that the seeoud reduction of 25 per cent, mentioned in the cablegram would lie brought about, and that the British rates also would he reduced again to the same extent, making a total reduction of 50 per cent, on both American and British vessels. Wages were higher on American vessels than on the British vessels, which was against American vessels, but most of them, as (hr mes.-age stated, being oil burners, did not need coaling, and in this way incurred less expense than the British ships.
