WAR PENSIONS.
THE GRADUAL INCREASE
New Zealand has already paid out in pensions, as a result of the great war a sum of £1,425,321), and the 25,813 pensions granted involve an annual liability of £1,711,481. Successive improvements in (he pension scale, and the more serious eases which had to be dealt with as the war went on, resulted in the average pension rising from £46 a year in 1915-16, £53 the following year, to £67 now.
The whole financial position as at 30th November is;— ANNUAL LIABILITY. At 31st March, 1918.—Number of pensions 14,497; amount, £904,383; plus new pensions, 1918-19 to 30th November. 8,696; amount. £589,229; totals; Number of pensions, 23,193; amount, £1,493,612. Less deaths and cancellations, 1918-19 to 30th November, 2,352; amount, £141,000. Actual annual cost at present date: 20,841 pensions: amount, £1,352,612.
