MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
.MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mauawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Wednesday. Then! were present: Sir James Alison (chairman)) Crs M . S. Penny, IV. T. Phillips, 11. G. Hammond, IV. E. Barber, J. Boyce, and H. H. Hunt. CORRESPONDENCE. With reference to peace celebrations, the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Internal Affairs, notified that each local body had full liberty to make its own arrangements. The Under-Secretary for Interna! Affairs, Wellington, wrote relative to the Council’s .proposal to adopt the system of rating on the unimproved value, that the Minister would like to be notified as soon as a poll had been taken, so that the necessary Order-in-Coimcil might be issued. The Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, Wellington, replying to (lie Council’s objection to a license being issued to the Rongotea Dairy Company to erect electric lines within Ibe county for a period of 42 years, stated that the objection by the Council would tie considered. It was pointed out by the Department that, under clause 8 of the license, the Council had full power to protect its interests. The New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, Wellington, extended an invitation for the Council’s engineer to attend the annual conference, to be held at Auckland from the 181 h to the 22nd February next. —Permission was given to the Council’s engineer, Mr A. C. Hickford, to attend. TREASURER’S REPORT. The treasurer presented bis report showing that the balances of the various accounts were: —County fund account, dr., £5,022 Os sd; loan account, cr., £382 7s; net dr. balance, £5,540 2s sd. Amounts availaide for expenditure to 31st March, 1919: —Sandon riding £473 3s Bd, Mt. Stewart £747 18s 9d, Waitohi £l,OBl 40s 3d, Rongotea £904 11s 3d, Carnarvon £053 3s Id, Kawa Kawa £3BO 19s Id, Awahou £357 10s lid. The report was adopted. ENGINEEK’S REPOK T. The engineer reported as follows: Awahou Riding.—The FoxtonShannon road at the present time is in fair ordci, but Ihe Whirokino road has been damaged by flood water to some considerable extent, and requires several hundred yards of metal to build it up for the tralfie next winter. Tramway. —We have done a good deal of work on (lie tram line in the shape of weeding, cleaning, and replacing decayed sleepers where required. A fair amount of ballast is yet required to linislt off the line between Pukemii and the Ohakea siding. Some of the 401 b. rails are very much eaten away, and an old one or two will have to be replaced between Sanson and Penny’s (due, when the shipment of new rails arrive. Metal. —The outlook is not very promising for a good supply of ernshed road metal for the coming season, owing to Hie wet weather and mishaps at Urn crusher, and (he dillicnlties of transporting the metal to tin 1 lower end of the county. (t will lake ns some considerable time yet to put out what is required for new work and what was authorised last year. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT. Owing to the influenza epidemic the traffic fell off very considerably, and a debit of £lO9 9s 7d is shown on the month’s work. The chief items of traflic were; —Merchandise 554 tons, cheese 701 tons, manure 024 lons, wool 150 bales, timber 10,800 feet, metal and clay 030 cubic yards. Pares amounted to £2 13s lid. The report was adopted. RATE. On the motion of Cr Hammond, it was resolved |u make a drainage rale of Id in the £ on the rateable value id’ all properly in the Orona Downs Drainage District f(>r one vear, pavable on the Ist January, 1919. AMENDED RATE ROLL. The following alteration to the rate roll was agreed to: —T. Masters to 11. K. Masters, K. E. O’Neale to J. Duke, J. Hirs to L. R. A’Court and executors, 8. Avery to W. IT. Mnrhpy, G. White to J. L. Harvey, J. Nathan and Co. to -J. W. Lamnar, Beckman's estate # to A. and M. Beckman. G. M. Farmer to A. Ross, If. F. Worsfold to C. A. Lovett, Robinson Bros, to A. K. Spoil's. GENERAL. The application of Mr G-. T. Woodroofe, of Foxton, for the transfer of a slaughtering license to K. Bryant was agreed to. The Christmas holidays were lixud by the Council as from 24th December to the (itb January next. The next meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday, 4th Februarv.
