PILFERING CARGO.
At the local police court on Saturday, before Messrs Chrystall ami Horn bio v,-, J’s.P., William Robertson, a casual wharf hand, was charged with the theft ol' cigarettes to the value of ss, the property of Messrs Levin and Co.
Accused pleaded guilty. Mr Lyon, second mate of the s.s Queen of the South, said accused was engaged in slinging cargo in the hold of the ship. He called attention of those employed to the fact that the lid of a case containing cigarettes was broken, and to he careful in handling the package. Accused was seen to remove two tins and take them to his coat.
Constable Woods said there was nothing previous of a criminal nature against the accused. The Bench directed attention to the seriousness of cargo pilfering, which resulted in large losses to slapping linns and merchants. A line of £2 was imposed.
