AN APPRECIATION.

TESTIMONIAL TO DR. MANDL,

Yesterday afternoon the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall), Mr Horublow (representative of the District Hospital Board) Cr. McMurray, and Mr Bock, wailed upon Dr. Mandl, at his surgery, for the purpose of presenting him with a testimonial on behalf of citizens and district settlers, appreciative of his splendid and unseltish efforts during the recent epidemic. The Mayor quickly put the Doctor at his ease by informing him that he had a very pleasant duty to perform. He then read the following testimonial: —

Fox ton, N.Z., November 28th, 1918 Dr. C. L. Mandl, Foxton.

Dear Dr. Mandl: We the undersigned residents of Foxton and surrounding district wish to convey to you our heartfelt gratitude for your unremitting attention and constant help to us during the present epidemic. It

is sufficient to say the very small percentage of deaths in our midst is mainly due to your untiring efforts and self-sacrifice, and we wish you to accept this as a modest testimonial of our appreciation of your valuable work in

combating the trouble, and remain for ourselves and others, Yours very sincerely, John Chrystall (Mayor), George Coley, R. Bryant, R. MeMurray, Thos, Henderson, F. W. Gardes, Alf. Fraser, Fred. L. Woodroofe, E. A. Oxley. In handing the document to llio doctor, (he Mayor referred to (ho splendid work lie hnd accomplished during (he epidemic and (he small percentage fit mortality was a tribute to his skill and self-sacrilic-ing efforts. At a la(er date it was proposed to embody the testimonial in a suitable form, and to entertain the recipient at a public function. The Mayor also asked the Doctor (o convey to Mrs Mandl their appreciation of her efforts. Mr Bock said the signatures to the testimonial only represented a. small percentage of those who, had time and opportunity permitted, would have been delighted to have added their names to the testimonial.

Air Horn blow also endorsed (lie remark's of the previous speakers. Dr. Mandl thanked the speakers for (heir appreciative remarks, and to (hose who had signed the testimonial. He had only carried out his professional duties. There were times in the life of a medical man when epidemic cycles were experienced, and when medical men were called upon to put forth every effort to stay its ravages. The present pandemic had been a great strain on the medical profession. He was thankful that health and strength had been afforded him to do what ho had done during the outbreak. He said the temporary hospitals had been of great assist-ance,-as many of the patients had been removed from infectious areas. He paid a tine tribute to those women who had freely and voluntarily assisted in nursing the sick both in the hospitals and in private homes, and there was no doubt but they had been instrumental in saving several lives. As a medical man he had endeavoured to do his duty. He believed the big wave had now passed, but there was still need for caution against minor attacks still prevalent. He asked the deputation to convey his own and Mrs Mandl’s thank.- to all for the testimonial of appreciation.
