The Slate school will re-assemble on Monday. All the class-rooms will be thoroughly cleansed and •fumigated. The head teacher will arrange gargle drill i'or the scholars. At Monday night’s Council meeting Cr. Henderson was appointed to represent the Council at the conference being held in Wellington today in connection witii (lie proposed hydro-electric sdicme for the North Island. Cr. Henderson left for Wellington yesterday afternoon. Six applications for the position of temporary roadman were received at Monday night's Council meeting, but it was decided not to make any appointment in the meantime, as Mr T. W. Mitchell will probably be in a position to again take up his duties in the near future. The Girls’ Guild, in their Red Cross costumes, were a distinctive feature in Tuesday’s procession, and were accorded a salvo as they marched along. The Ladies’ Patriotic Guild, too, participated and held aloft the Red Gross banner. These two bauds of workers have stuck to their jobs in providing comforts for the wounded since the outbreak of hostilities, and their enthusiasm is as keen as ever.
All Saints’ and the Presbyterian Sunday schools will bo closed on Sunday. Mesdames James Robinson and Green will have charge of the Patriotic Shop on Saturday. Mr P. W. Gardes, of Buxton, who was on a visit to Auckland, lias been taken ill with influenza, and is at-present in hospital there. The Public Health Department inserts an important notice relating to the influenza epidemic and the precautions that should be taken both to avoid affection and after affection. We are asked to thank all who assisted in Ihe recent celebrations, and particularly the Borough Band and bandmaster Mr Golder, and .Mr Geo. Rimmer for supervising the erection of the platform. It was decided at Monday nighVs meeting that in future the Town Clerk must carry out all office duties without an assistant, and that the hours during which the oilice will be open to the public will be 10 to 12, and 2 to 4, also that (he Town Clerk be relieved from (he position of engineer. Dr. Mandl, speaking at the gathering on Tuesday night, warned the public to keep its head during the prevalence of the epidemic. He was pleased to say that, all local patients were progressing satisfactorily. Those attacked should immediately go to bed. All premises should be thoroughly disinfected and isolation precautions taken. Acting upon (he Suggestion of Dr. Mandl, Mr Perreau, in co-operalion with the local butchers, has consented to supply soup at cost price to influenza patients. This will lie greatly appreciated in many hornet where the inmates arc down with the disease. Only homes affected will be supplied. The boys’ Darkiown Band was one of the most amusing features in Tuesday’s celebrations. The lads were grotesquely attired, and the big drum appeared -to he the most tuneful instrument in the band’s possession. The boys collected 11s Id for (he St. Dnnslan’s Hospital for blind soldiers. McMurray asked if, when granting' permission to erect hoarding on (he footpath in front of Moutoa Buildings, now in course of erection, provision had been made for the contractor or owner to indemnify (he Conned in the event of anv claim or claims should, an accident occur. The Mayor said that the only condition under whhdi permission to erect the hoarding had been granted was that same should be properly lighted at night. Cr McMurray Hum moved, and it was seconded by Cr Walker and carried,. (hat the Mayor ascertain from the Council's legal adviser what position tins Council would be .in in regard to a claim for being made if an accident: happened through the hoarding being erected on the footpath and street in front of Moutoa Buildings, and that lie be empowered to take such steps will safeguard (be Council.
