A GERMAN PIANO.

Some lime ago the local School Committee were offered the purchase of a piano to replace the one destroyed in the lire. At last month’s meeting a motion was passed that the piano be inspected and valued by an expert, and if the report was favourable that the Committee purchase same. The expert’s report and valuation was read at last night's Committee meeting, which stated that the piano was as good as new, of German make — which was no detriment —and suitable for the school, and the price was much below its value. Mr Kellow said he objected to a German piano going into the school, and he gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution. A discussion ensued, in winch it was pointed out that the mover of the motion and other members of the Committee had German-made pianos in their houses, and Mr Martin asked whether they were 'prepared, for the sake of sentiment, to destroy them. The Chairman stated that prior to the war certain Fnglish piano manufacturers purchased the internals of of pianos from German manufacturers. In any case the piano under discussion was purchased before the wav. The head teacher said it would not be in keeping with patriotism to teach the children singing to the accompaniment of a German piano. Further discussion was held over until the motion comes up at next meeting.
