Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1918. PEACE RUMOURS.

SOME imaginative individual set a rumour a Tool last night that peace had been declared, and for this reason certain reinforcements about to sail were held back? Another individual was in fanned as a fact “that peace was arranged, and that the government were withholding the information until the morrow.” Another visitor to,Wellington had it on the authority of the shop window decorations that peace news had arrived. Telephones were set ringing, and enquiries made. Thank heaven the lire bell and Borough Band were not fooled. Of course, the rumour was without foundation in fact. \Vhen Germany accepts lho terms laid down by the Allied Council through .Marshal Eoch, the authorities will lose no time in Hashing the news across the wires. There will be no withholding of such information. It must not be forgotten that even if an armistice is granted it will lie to discuss the terms of peace. The acceptance by Germany of the Allies’ conditions will give cause for rejoicing, as it will practically mean Germany’s surrender. Opinion is divided in Germany, however, and many things may happen, and much blood may flow before a general peace is declared.
