NEWS AND NOTES.
Says the Taranaki News: “The best way to check aggregation is undoubtedly to make Iho man who wants a great deal of land pay for it by means of a si ill graduated tax, and the amount of the lax must be increased until it is found that undue aggregation ceases.’’ “Jerusalem is the filthiest city I have ever seen,” said a seasoned New Zealand trooper who has seen many Eastern cities and towns, “Jt can’t get the smell of the place out of my nostrils. It comes back every, time I think of the Holy City, There is no attempt at drainage anywhere. The people just throw their rubbish out in the streets, where it is worried by mangy dogs and mangy children. .Since we got hold of Jerusalem some improvements have been made in the district, mostly in road construction. A splendid new road has been made between Lud and Jerusalem with the aid of native labour.” The following taken from a letter written by a "Wellington resident to a lady in Hawera, gives some idea of the position in regal’d to house-hunting in Wellington: “The house in front of us was empty, and the landlady was to be seen there from 7to 9. It was a Saturday evening, and dad had been to the Hutt, and when he turned into our street he thought there was a lire or something going on, by the crowd. There were hundreds, I think, and the house is 32s 6d a week.” It might be stated that the house is an old one, of six rooms, having a very .-mall yard, and being in a small street.
