FLAX EXPORTS.
R'ECENT HOLD-UP EXPLAINED. It is stated that a Manawatu flax miller received a private cable from New York about two months ago advising him of the impending stoppage of New Zealand flax importation to the United States. The reason then given was one which we have not seen in the course of the recent discussion on the subject, either in Parliament or the Press, namely, that the United States, in conducting certain negotiations with Mexico, promised that country to give her sisal hemp preference until her surplus stocks were used. This information reaches us from a reliable source, and will throw interesting light upon the question, which is one of paramount interest to this district. The only question which now interests us is, will the Government take prompt steps to obtain full information, and when obtained, act with equal promptitude?—Palmerston Times.
