ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.
MAN AND HIS WIFE CHARGED. Christchurch, Oct. 20. Arthur Patrick M’Guire and Janet Alary Al’Guire, his wife, were each clanged at the Afagistrate’s Court to-day, before Air S. K. M’Carthy, S.M., with obtaining £194 -Is from May, 1917, lo August, 1918, from William John Cupples, by false pretences, The male accused had previously been twice remanded on ibis charge, originally from Dunedin, it being (bore alleged that he laid obtained the money by representing it was being used to oblqin the release of a Aliss Mines from a convenl. Detective M’llveney applied for a remand for a week. Mr W. J. Hunter, for the accused, staled that the woman was in a delicate condition, and asked for nominal bail. The Chief Detective: They might leave. I understand that M’Guire was endeavouring to leave the country when lie was arrested. The .Magistrate; How can anyone leave 1 the country without a permit ? The accused were remanded for a week, bail .being granted, the female accused in her own recognisances, and Al’Guire in two sureties of £SO each and his own surety of £IOO. In the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Frederick JohnWormald and Cecil Charles M’Cullough were also charged with attempting to defraud Cupples, and were remanded to appear in Christchurch on Ist November.
