ECHO OF THE GREEN RAY CASE.
SEDITIOUS UTTERANCE. LIGHT FINKS IMPOSED. Wellington, Oct. 29. In the Alagistrate’s Court, David Griffin and John Charles Troy were charged that they did cause to be published an advertisement in New Zealand Truth a seditious utterance in the words; “We presume you are now aware that both the abovenamed Irishmen have been sentenced to 11 months’ hard labour for publishing art ides Mealing with Ireland.” Air Alacassey (for the Crown) referred lo (he prosecution of O’Regan and Cummins, in Dunedin, respecting an article in Ihe Green Ray, and said the advertisement referred (o Ihe article, and, he eunlemled, applauded it. Sir John Findlay (for the defence) said the advertisement was a genuine appeal for funds for the maintenance of the wife and children of Cummins, and did no more than explain why the men were punished. The Magisirale (Air F. V. Frazer) said that whether the words wore used intentionally or not the tendency was seditious, and for that reason he was bound to enter a conviction, but did not intend to impose a heavy penalty. Each defendant was lined £5.
