Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1913. SHEEP FARMERS AND SURPLUS PROFITS.
Tflli sheepl’armers of (lie Dmuinmn have tin> with enthusiasm the proposal that iheir share 1 of any surplus profits ni:idi 1 liy tlic_* Imperial Government mi the issue of Xcw Zealand who! I'm- civilian purposes' should lie devoted to a fund for llio dependants of sailors of (he Royal Xavy and mercantile marine who have been wounded or have lost: their lives in defence of the Empire. During the first few weeks the trustees have received signed orders from over 2,200 woolgrowcrs from Xorth Cape to Stewart Island, representing three million sheep, and orders are arriving at the rate of fifty to one hundred per day. As any distribution made by the Imperial Government will be pro rata to the value of the clip, the idea is as near as one can get to equality in giving, and this aspect is plainly recognised, as replies are arriving as freely from the owners of a few bales as from the owners of many. 'Where all are signing so freely com■pnrisons are invidious, but a few particulars arc interesting. In the
list of comities the largest number of signatories is from Waimoa County; Nelson, with Southland, Rangitikei, Master!on, and Ashburton Counties in that order. In number of bales, Hawkes Bay county heads the list, followed closely by Rangitikei, Maslertoin and Waiapu counties. In the list of sheep districts the largest number of signatories is from the west coast of the North Island, with Auckland and Otago a close second, while in number of bales the west coast again heads the list, with Hawkes Bay second and Otago third.
