FLAX FOR AMERICA.
PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS. AUCKLAND MERCHANTS’ CONCERN. Tlio restrictions proposed to be placed by the United States Government on the importation of New Zealand hemp is causing merchants serious concern. The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr Robert Bums stated yesterday that if all llax export licenses were cancelled in the manner proposed, the industry in this country would be seriously affected, .and (laxmillers compelled to reduce operations, and, in some eases, close down entirely.
Jn reply to a protest made by Air Burns, in regard to.the matter, the Prime Minister has sent a telegram stating that he understands that the proposed restrictions do not affect consignments of flax for which import licenses have already been issued. Mr Burns has replied to Mr Massey, staling that he |ias been informed by the American ConsulGeneral that all licenses for tlax shipped after October 20th have been cancelled.
A private cablegram, dated October 24th, received in Auckland, states that the American Government has revoked all New Zealand hemp licenses for shipment after October 20th. —New Zealand Herald.
