THE HEMP MARKET.
EXPORT TO AMERICA. LICENSES CANCELLED. Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., of Wellington, have forwarded the following letter, dated October 23rd, to flaxmillers in this district: “We regret to say that cable advices from America received yesterday intimate that the Washington authorities have cancelled all permits for hemp not actually now shipped to America, and refuse to grant any new licenses. The effect of this is to close the American market altogether for hemp. As this market has been practically the only outlet for New Zealand hemp for two or throe years, the step taken by the Washington authorities, unless modified in some way, will ho far-reaching so far as flax is concerned. In the meantime business is impossible, and we cannot name prices. .Wo can only hope that some way out of the present difficulty can he found. We are ('aiding for further information.”
