“LIFE OF PARLIAMENT.”
THERE is much curiosity as to the exact letter of the law on the “life of Parliament.'’ In the ordinary course a General Election would have' taken place towards the end of 1917, Clause 19 of the finance Act, 1918 (the shortest session) provides:— “Notwithstanding anything to tiie contrary in the Legislature Act, 1908, the House of Kcpresentatives, as existing at the passing of this Act, shall, unless the General Assembly is sooner dissolved by the Governor-General, pursuant to the Cons'titution Act, continue until the 19th day of December,. 1919, and no longer/’ "When ijuestioned in debates on the Bill, Ministers said that this clause did not mean necessarily that a General Election might be postponed-til! December, 1919. The possibility of an election in I lie early part of 1919 was mentioned. (Questions are being asked now as to the likely state of the Government's mind if the war ends this rear.
