Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1918. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

THERE Jims lurn a stirring up cl enthusiasm in local I’mriotic Society a fl air-; of late, which, it! maintainnd. will widen I he organisation's spliciT of aclivities in every direclinn, The executive has opened iij) every avenue and broken through eon.-dilulional procedure to admit: the public into membership, and to provide work - for enthusiasts on committees which range from farewelling and welcoming home soldiers, attending to the necessities of soldiers wives and families while husbands and fathers are at the front, setting up a social club for returned soldiers, and providing monthly picture entertainments to supplement the funds. The Borough Council, Racing' Club, Bowling Club. Labour Committee, and Returned Soldiers have been granted the rigid to appoint two delegates each to act on The executive, The annual subscription for members lias been reduced from 2s Gd to Is. It will be seen, therefore, that the Society has removed every barrier to membership, and made the way open for any one who so desires to participate in the Society’s activities. Another outlet for enthusiasm and fund raising was suggested at the recent meeting by a proposal to hold a big carnival. On top of all this is the weekly shop. If the present general interest is maintained in patriotic affairs, the Society will need to guard against overlapping of committees, and in order to avoid this the limits of each connnitlte should be clearly defined by the executive, which alone possesses the power to veto and the control of finance. Now that all are for the Society there is praeti-

cully no limit to its activities from a patriotic point of view, an less such enthusiasm ..is make-believe. Anyliow, we congratulate the Society upon its renewed vitality, and wish it everv success in the future.
