PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

A special general meeting of members and intending members of the local Patriotic Society was held in the Council Chambers on, Thursday evening. There was an attendance of over 30, The meeting was convened as the outsome ot: a public meeting held about two months ago, when the administrative affairs of the Society were criticised and explained. It was subsequently decided by the Society’s Executive to afford every facility to the public to join up and co-operato in carrying on the work for which the Society was called into being, and to spread flic work more equitably over a larger number, and to afford opportunity to outside critics to become useful and active members. The chair was occupied by the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) as president, who expressed pleasure at ,-eeing such a representative gathering present. A. motion was carried unanimously that all present become members, A good deal of discussion took place re the setting up of committees, and explaining their sphere of action, it was pointed out that such committees would act subject to the approval of the Executive. The following committees were set up; Farcwelling Committee: Mesrs Aitcheson, Furrie, Jno. Russ, Moorehouse and Derrick; Welcoming Commit fee: Messrs Tutmielifl'e, Large, Secretary, Rev, Raine, Mesdames. F. Robinson, Alex. Ross, Tevioldale, John Robinson, Freeman; General Welfare Committee (to render assistance to wives and families ■ f men on active service) : Messrs Colder, Stevenson, Huntley, Kelinw, Mesdames Hornblow, F, Robinson and Miss J. Ross. Several of tlmso ladies elected and not present were appointed subject to their consent to act.
