WELLINGTON CENTRAL.

THE polling takes place to-day for the election of a member to represent Wellington Central in the House of. Representatives. The candidates are Messrs Hildreth (National candidate), P. Fraser (Labour). Muck (Independent

Labour), At mure (Independent), Gammon (Returned Soldiers), and Tanner (Democrat). When the National Government was formed a compact was entered into by the Deform and Liberal parties in respect to tilling vacancies which might occur during the life of the present Parliament, and Mr Hildreth was the candidate jointly agreed upon to represent the Government. Labour was not a parly to the compact. It is expected that supporters of the National Government will be loyal to the pledge and support Mr Hildreth, and in that case he should secure the seat. The Labour vote, however, is a strong factor in Wellington Central, but it will bo split between Fraser and Mack. The result should be a win for the National candidate, with Fraser close up, followed by Mack. Messrs At more and Garmson may save their deposits. Considerable excitement: exists in Wellington today, and the supports of the three lirst-named candidates are all conlident of victory.
