A GERMAN RADICAL ON AUSTRALIANS.
MAXIMILIAN HARDEN’S VIEWS
Maximilian Harden, editor of: Zukumft, a Radical. and one of the leading’ German publicists, wrote an article on Australia when the Australians voted against compulsory military service. Addressing a recruiting meeting near Sydney last week, Mr G. W. Fuller (Home Secretary) read a portion of that article, as follows; —
“We have the greatest contempt possible for any human to possess for the Australian, doing as little work as he, can, spending his substance in snort and gambling (which is his religion), and ’in drinking. Who can claim to be honest laugh al the quixotic bravery of the Australian, whose enthusiasm carried him away to face our God-led army. . . . We will break the hearts of the unionists for till time. . . . We are gratified at the success of our agents in Australia and the ]lower of German gold. Those Germans who, like Judas, have turned against the Fatherland in its hour of trial, will be suitably dealt with. Those who have stood firm and are now interned will be placed over their captors and in high administrative positions. . . . The Australians arc the most ignorant people in the wide world. They cannot speak" or write correctly the British
language. . . . Our propaganda in the land of the Southern Cross has been most -access t'u! We will scatter them over the face of Ihe earth, whilst we will retain in Australia their women to be mothers of a new German race in the Great Pacilic.
“Any young Australian with the old British blood in his veins must answer that in the only possible way —by enlisting," remarked Mr Fuller.
