MOUTOA NOTES.

(Own Correspondent.)

It was with deep regret we heard of the death of Private Frank Smith, killed in action in France. Pte. Smith Avas the youngest son of Mr J. A. Smith, now of Foxton, and one of Moutoa’s old pioneers, aaTio resided for many years at Linley Farm. Another son, Pte. .1. Smith, is also on active service. We extend our sympathy to his sorroAving brothers and sisters, and his aged father, and for their comfort I quote John Oxenham’s Vision Splendid: “Oh, not in vain has been your great endeaA'our, For hy your dying life is horn again; And greater love hath no man fok- • ened ever Than with his life to purchase Life’s high gain.” The cold snap experienced lately has been very disastrous to the dairy herds around Moutoa. Several farmers have lost some valuable coavs —the result of chill. The Moutoa branch of the Patriotic Committee are holding another evening on Friday, the 20th, in aid of the general fund. Visitors Avill be entertained Avith progressive euchre, and there Avill be several interesting competitions. Arrangements are in the capable hands of Mr C. Morgan, hon. secretary for Moutoa, and judging by the ready sale of tickets everything points to a very successful evening. W'e are pleased to hear Mrs C. Firth, of Whitaunui, is mnv recovering from her recent severe illness.
