BOROUGH EMPLOYEE AND HIS HOLIDAYS.
At the hist monthly meeting- of the Borough Council Mr T. W. Mitchell made application for a week’s pay in lieu of holidays which he claimed were due to him when he left the sanitary job, but which he did not receive. The matter was held over until .Monday’s • meeting, Mr Mitchell, in the meantime, to supply a statement showing the holidays he had received whilst in the Council's employ. On Monday night Mr Mitchell submitted a .statement showing that on December 4lli, 11)15, after being in the employ of the Council for two and alialf years, lie received four weeks' holiday. On December 23rd, 1010, he was granted a holiday of two weeks, and on September Sih, 1917, he received one week's holiday. He left the sanitary job on December, and claimed that at that time there was a holiday of one week due to him, which he did not get. The Mayor said that on February 14th, 191(1, a motion was passed to the effect that the sanitary employee should receive two weeks' holiday each year. Mr Mitchell continued on the .job until December Bth, 1917, a period of one year and 10 months, and had received three weeks' holidays. Had he continued for a further two months he would have been cut tiled to a furllier week's leave. Under the circumstances he thought the Council should grant Mr Mitchell’s application. He had been a very faithful servant, and bad stayed on the job for a month to oblige the Council. Cr Henderson; If the man is entitled to the holiday he .should get it. Cr Coley said the policy of the Council in reference to holidays was a had one. If the employees were entitled to holidays they should ho made to take them, it wasn’t fair for a man to receive his holiday pay and stay at work and receive his. ordinary pay in addition. Cr Hannah: Quite right! Continuing, Cr Coley said all employees should he compelled to take their holidays, lie considered some of the employees had had more money in the way of holiday pay than they were entitled fo.* The Council had given a good deal of money away that had not hecu earned. it was decided on the motion of Cr McMurray, seconded by Cr Hurley, that after investigating Mr Mitj chell’s claim for one week’s pay in If lieu of holidays, the Council pay Mr Mitchell the amount of one week's pay (TO).
