FOOTBALL.

An endeavour is being made to arrange a match to he played on the racecourse on Saturday between a team from Bainesso and the local “old timers.” Mr Roore Rangiheuea has the matter in hand. The final for the Perreau Cup and Petrie Shield between Awahon and Crusaders was played on the racecourse on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for Crusaders by four points (a potted goal) to nil. As, however, a protest has been entered by Awahou, the question of which team will be entitled to hold the Cup and Shield will not he decided until the protest has been dealt with to-morrow night.

On Saturday a team representing the football club of the Foxton State School, together with supporters, numbering forty in all, travelled to Levin, in charge of the male teachers, to play a return match. The weather was delightful, and it was a merry party that cheered its way down Main Street shortly after 10 o'clock. On arrival at Levin the members of the team were hospitably entertained at luncheon. Play commenced at 1.30 p.m. Foxton led off with some smart play, which led up to a eleven try by Kere Hirini, who converted it. The play was very even for some time, until Levin broke away and Watson crossed the line. Levin, however, failed to kick the goal. Foxton now began to press their opponents hard, and the chances seemed in their favour, but no score resulted, and at half-lime the game stood, Foxton s—Levin5 —Levin 3. During the second spell Levin began attacking with vigour, but clever line kicking by the Foxton backs several times saved the situation for Foxton, and at times carried the play dangerously close to their opponents’ line. Levin backs returned the compliment, and soon Pringle scored for Levin. This try was not converted. Heartened by their success, Levin now kept Foxton on the defensive for most of the remainder of the game, and before time was called Pringle had again crossed the line. No goal was kicked, and al the call of time the score stood: Levin 9 —Foxton 5.

The Foxton boys left for home amidst die cheers of the Auctors, protesting that they were not doAvnhearted. Altogether a most enjoyable time Avas spent. Thanks are duo to Messrs Ross and Petersen for their assistance in the matter of transport.
