THE DEAD SEA.

NO WONDER IT DIED. An interesting letter has been received by Mr C. Leek, Mayor of Newmarket, from an Anekland hoy serving in Egypt. The writer says; “I am near Jerieho, about (wo miles from the River Jordan, and two miles from the Dead Sea. No wonder it died. It is a trifle warm in the valley —it gets up to 140 deg., and you can raise a good thirst. I expect yon road of our raid out to the Hezay railway,* in the land of Goshen. We destroyed five miles of the line that runs to Mecca. 1 The Auckland regiment was the first (o cross the Jordan. Just behind me is the Mount of Temptation. There is nothing very tempting' in the scenery now. Jericho used to be a fine place, There, are all (he rains of (he old irrigation channels. Over (he hills |o Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and the lower Jordan Valley is desolation. There are plenty of fish in the Jordan, hut np to date we have no means of catching them. I have tried hooks baited with bully beef, but they won’t have if. There are some very big fish, and yon can see them come lo the surface. I’ll fry and lake a few bombs down next lime. 1 was disappointed with Jerusalem. The place was in an awful slate, and copulated with the biggest rogues and thieves unhung. Port Raid is a Sunday school compared with it. But they are squaring it np now,”
