CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.

FOURTEEN FIGHTING IN FRANCE.

Reference to conscientious objectors was made by Sir James Allen when speaking at a gathering of the Wellington Orphans’ Club. The, most interesting statement he made was that the 14 conscientious objectors deported and sent to France some time ago were now “fighting with their units.” He did not know how their conversion had been brought about, but it was a, matter on which both they and the country were to be congratulated. The most puzzling conscience he had discovered was that of the objector who had never read the Bible nor entertained any religions convictions. Tie simply based his refusal (o do Ids duty to the country on Ids own “opinions,” and, of course, his ease was hopeless. Yet lie was typical of most of the men who claimed exemption on the score of conscientious .scruples!
