CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW HARBOUR.

FolloAving a visit by Air F. W. Furkert, Government’ Inspecting Engineer, the Harbour Board has been
supplied Avith a confidential report. The hoard has also been granted tho services of Mr A. Slinger, Gisborne, Borough Engineer, avlio subsequently met the hoard in commit 100. Later the hoard again met in committee, Avhen it was unanimously decided that a Bill be immediately promoted to authorise the construction of a harbour at Waikokupu, with a railAvay for the combined districts. This means no more expenditure on the Wairoa Harbour and tho abandonment of works that cost nearly £IOO,OOO. The board left for Waikokupu to-day to confer regarding amalgamation. A public meeting Avill be held to-morroAV to discuss the position.
Waikokupu is situated at the extremity of Hawke’s Bay, It is said that if a lifirhoiir were made there a depth of 30ft. of water Avould he obtained. Wairoa, south of Waikokupu, lias always been the port, hut the bar at the entrance is a drawback. Waikokupu is midway between Napier and Gisborne, end the country thereabouts is said to be A’ery fertile,
