PUBLIC HOSPITAL FEES.
REQUEST FOR UNIFORMITY. A circular sent by the Minister of Public Health (the Hon. G. W. Russel!) lo Hospital Boards throughout the Dominion requests that they should agree to a uniform maintenance charge of £2 2s a week for patients. At present the average,is about £1 15s, but in several small hospitals they run as high as £3 3s. In the ease of members of friendly societies it is recommended that (he weekly fee should lie £1 is. In his recent statement of hospital revenue for the year .1917, the .Minister included £231,(Mi1) (“fees payable” by patients). Enquiry shows that the amount paid was much below the sum “payable.” For that year the gross amount payable was £253,478, but ojily £102,271 was collected, and this sum included a number of payments by (be Defence Department for soldier patients. Ordinarily (lie boards receive, on an average, about one-third of (he amount payable by palienls. The average cost of maintenance of a patient is about £2 a week (excluding capital charges).
