PROPOSED SWIMMING BATHS.
Discussing the question of the proposed swimming baths at Monday night’s Council meeting, the Mayor said he had again conferred with Mr Edwards, the engineer who provided the plans and specifications, and he (the engineer) was strongly of opinion that the site near the boat-shed was absolutely the best that could be obtained. The speaker said he hud written to the Trustees of McCarthy’s Estate, owners of the Family Hotel property, asking if they would sell the Council a strip of land at the rear of the hotel, facing Harbour Street. If they could get this strip of land the Council would he able to divert Harbour Street and construct the baths on, the foreshore above highwater mark, which was the boundary of the Harbour Board's property. He had not yet received a reply from the McCarthy Trustees, hut on receipt of sin\ii would convene a special meeting of the Council to consider the matter.
