FOOTBALL.

An event of much interest to the locn! schoolboys was the visit of the Levin District - High School’s primarv football fifteen to try conclusions with the first football fifteen of the Foxton school. The visitors, in charge of Mr A. .1. Harding, arrived by motor 'bus at 11.-In a.m., accompanied by four masters ami about a dozen extra boys. They were entertained by the local team at luncheon at Perreau’s rooms. Lunch over, the teams adjourned to Ihe racecourse, the scene of the strife, to settle the matter of supremacy. The teams appeared to be evenly matched in weight, but the Fox ton team showed much superior combination, both in forwards and backs, and the result, 14 points to nil, fairly indicates the difference in the strength of the opposing teams. Foxton won the toss, and Levin’s kick-off was well returned to touch by Hirini. The Foxton boys soon asserted themselves, and kept their opponents on the defensive most of the lime. From a forward rush dim Christie scored, but the try was not converted. After a number of passing - bouts by the Foxton lads and strenuous defence on the part of Levin, Bert. Cummertield scored in a good position, and Hirini converted —8 to nil. In the second spell Christie and Cummerfield again scored, but neither of the tries was goaled, and the game ended 14 points to nil in favour of the home team. For Foxton, W. Walls (half), K. Hirini (five-eighths), C. Francis (three-quarter), and K. Robinson (full-back) were the best of the backs, while the outstanding forwards were Bert Cummerfield, who played a fine game, E. Thompson, J. Christie, were most prominent, but all played well. As we do not know the names of the visiting players we cannot, individualise. Mr W. Neville gave every satisfaction as referee. The visitors left for home at 3.ls,.after an exchange of cheers. In connection with the above, the headmaster, Mr L. J. Fume, is arranging with Mr Harding, assistantmaster of Levin D.H. School, to play a return match at Levin about the 24th August, and the intention is to make the home-and-home matches an annual fixture. The matter of girls’ hockey and basketball matches between the two schools is also under consideration. Friendly visits between school and school tend to promote a feeling of goodfellowship between the young of neighbouring towns, and the masters hope that the parents will cooperate with them in helping to build up good clean athletics in the school.

A team representing the combined local teams met a fifteen from Rainesse and K’angioln on Saturday last, and were successful in defeating them by 17 points to (i. The visitors were considerably heavier than the local boys, but they failed to use their weight to advantage. The Foxlon team showed great combination, both in forwards and backs, and put up a tine exhibition of football. Tries were scored for Foxlon by McEwen (2), and Mo-ms. Moses and Taylor each drop-kicked a goal from (be held. Reuben scored twice for the visitors. Mr Neville refereed.

A match has been arranged between the representative teams and a team of old-lime players. The losing team will entertain the victors at a dinner after the match, which lakes place on Saturday next. It, will lie interesting to sec if the weight and cunning of the “oldstagers" will be a match for condition and combination of their youthful opponents. Even if the senior team is defeated in the match they can be relied on to hold (heir own when the dinner comes in the even-
