GRAZING ON THE LONG ACRE.
COUNTY RESIDENTS FINED. For some lime past there have heen many complaints about the number of slock wondering on the Manawatu County roads, and in order to stop this nuisance, which lias become a source of danger to motor and other traffic, the County Engineer (Air Iliekford), in company with Constable Blaxland, of Ranged ea, put in a day early this month traversing Hie various roads in the County hi order to find out the offending owners, and a charge was laid against every ‘ owner whose slock was found wandering on Hie roads that day. Altogether thirteen owners were charged, and those eases came up at yesterday’s silting of the Af agist rale’s Court, when Constable Blaxland gave evidence as to the time of day and particulars of stock found wandering.
The first ease was against Philip Jones, of Bainesso, who did not appear, charged with allowing five cows and one horse to He at large on the road. He was convicted and fined 10s, with costs 12s. Alfred Jeffries, Rangiotu, no appearance, charged in respect to 11 wandering cows, and Fred. Altrec, Gflen Oroua, no appearance, who allowed one horse to graze on the road, were treated in the same manner as Philip Jones. In the case against George Du.sdalo, of Taikorea, belonging to whom 07 cows were found on the road, defendant appeared and pleaded guilty, explaining that on the day in question portion of his land was flooded, and as the flood wafers prevented him getting to his hay he had turned the cows out te feed on Hie road. Under the extenuating circumstances the Magistrate entered a conviction only, and ordered defendant to pay the cost of service of summons, ss. A. D. Scott, of Oroua Downs, charged with allowing two horses to wander, did not appear, but sent a letter admitting the offence. Fined 10s, with costs 7s.
E. J. Sullivan, of Moutoa, against whom a charge of allowing .12 cows on the road was made, admitted Hie offence, but pointed out that on that day the whole of his land was flooded, and it was a matter of allowing the stock to drown or starve or put them on the road. He decided it was best to turn (hem on the road. The Magistrate said it was certainly an emergency case, and therefore lie would enter tip a convict ion wit limit line or costs.
There were similar eiremnslanees in the ease against John Tamplin, oi' Afonina, who allowed six eow> on ihe road, and he was Iren led in (he same manner, being' eonvieleil only.
Alex. Albrey, ol' Tnikorea, charged with allowing one cow to graze on Ihe road, pleaded guilly, hnl said (hal he purehased Ihe eow (o provide milk For (he baby, and had (o turn il on (he road, as he eould no! gel grazing. Hohen While, id' Mangawhata. admitted bavin" 34 coms on tin l road. Me said that his land was very wef owing to I Ik* -heavy rains, and he pul his cows on the road and was minding them. Fined 20s, with costs 12s.
Meorge Mould, of Taikorea, no appearance, Cor allowing one calf at large, was lined Ps, with costs 12s. There were two informations against William Mimhlett, of Manga - wala, one in respect to a Hull, and (he other for allowing s(i cows on the road. Defendant admitted the ollonees, hut stated (hat someone* had left his gale open and he did not had out that his stock was on the rofld until some time afler. Fined 20s, with costs 2-ls.
-John Yanko, on a charge of allowing one cow to wander, was convicted without fine or costs.
