Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 23. 1918. EDUCATIONAL.
SEVERAL matters of importance were touched upon by the Hon. -1. A. Hanan (Minister of Education) at the conference with the Auckland Education Board recently. Alluding to the imperative need of securing the maximum efficiency in educational methods, he stated that Ministers of Education throughout the Empire when pleading with Government for increased appropriations for education expenditure were always met with the argument that their department was not a revenue-producing one. Those who assumed that attitude, however, overlooked certain facts, among which was that the standard of efficiency of the staffs of the revenueproduemg departments depended mainly upon the standard of efficieiency of the teaching profession and educational work. No department of public service receiving financial assistance presented such a splendid investment and produced such profitable returns to the State, provided, of course, the money appropriated was wisely spent. Educational work was really the foundation of the success of every trade, industry and department iu every
country. An increase in educational expenditure moanl an increase in iho national income because of Die increased national efficiency that was brought about. When the war was over there would be a groat industrial battle between the nations, and it' we were wise we would prepare now, so that when we emerged from ,our corner in .the industrial ring we would be well trained, disciplined, and enlightened.
