ANY idea that rich Americans are not bearing their share of the war’s financial burdens is dispelled (says the. New York correspondent of the Daily Express) by the estimates of taxes to lie paid by the multi-mil-lionaires, and the comment made upon them by Air William H. Edwards, collector at the Wall Street Revenue Office. “These estimates were not given out by this office,” said Mr Edwards, “but I think they dispel the erroneous idea that the rich are not called upon to bear their share of the war’s financial burdens. It should be borne’in mind that all incomes of £400,000 or more must pay a surtax of 63 per cent. Mr Edwards cited the case of a man who made £20,000, and had to pay over to the Government £12,600 in taxes.
