CHANGE IN AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT.

DR. J. C. REAKES, DIRECTOR

The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture, announced to-day that Dr. C. J. Reakes (Director of the Live Slock Division) had been appointed Director-General of Agriculture. The position of Mr F. S. Pope (who has been the chief Departmental bead as secretary) would be Assistant Director-Gen-eral.

The new director’s knowledge ef forming subjects is not limited to live stock. In early manhood he had two years’ farming experience in Canada, and he has had a variety of practical farming experiences in New Zealand. During recent years he has been managing director of the farm connected with the Wallaeeville Laboratory, and has had managerial responsibility in regard to the experimental farm at Maraaku and the farming operations on the quarantine islands of Auckland and Lyttelton. Moreover, his professional duties during the past twenty-one years have kept him in close touch with all classes of farmers.
