A FRUITLESS SEARCH.

Auckland, July 1

Constables Colwell. and Thornell, of Kaitaia and Houhora, report this morning from Pe Paid station that with the assistance of Maoris and settlers they thoroughly searched the coast from the North Cape to Cape Maria van Diemen, without result. Captain Wilson, of the steamer Waitatahi, reports having picked up a spar and board. The settlers and the natives have returned to their homes, hope of discovering any more survivors being abandoned. The Wailotahi has returned to Parenga and relinquished the search.

AN EFFECT OF THE DISASTER

FEELING AROUSED IN GISBORNE.

Gisborne, July 1

The Wiramera disaster has aroused great agitation here against enemy aliens. The Borough Council propose to discuss the matter tomorrow night, when a resolution will be proposed calling on the Government to intern enemy subjects, and inviting other local bodies to support the local demands.

The Marine Department has instructed the Superintendent of Mercantile Ala vine at Auckland to hold a preliminary inquiry concerning the loss of the Wimmera. The evidence is to bo forwarded to the Afarine Department, and it will he decided then whether it will be advisable lo hold any further inquiry.
