RACING IN WAR TIME.
AN ENGLISH PROTEST,
While the floAver of the human race, says the Daily Mail, is slowly hut surely being decimated on the blood-stained battlefields of Flanders, the undivided efforts of our gallant “sports” are being unstintedly devoted to the alleged preservation of the equine race in England.
The unutterable slush as to the maintenance of our blood stock is trotted forth with a sad disregard for all "the powers of belief Avliich the human race might possess. Railway companies are cutting down their train services; rollingstock is too scarce. Presumably some of it is Avanted to convey the army of sports to Ne\A r market. Candidly speaking, we think the time has come for the War Cabinet to put a stop to the hypocrisy, of this perpetuation of the breed of racehorses. We Avish some of our responsible Cabinet Ministers, espc-
cially Mr Honor Law, would pay a visit to’one of these meetings. We think he would come away ivith a strongly-developed, idea as to Avhose benefit the meetings Avere really being promoted for. The human race is in danger of extinction, not the equine. It would not matter for a few years provided we Avin the Avar, although there is not the least possibility of the racehorse dying out of existence if no racing look place for live years. But'surely no.patriotic, Englishman would dare to allege that horseracing is necessary at a time when the entire effort of the nation requires to be devoted to the Avinning of the. Avar..
