COST OF LIVING.

SOME BRITISH FIGURES. People who find the cost of living oppressive in New Zealand may be interested in a table of prices sent to a Wellington gentleman by a correspondent in Hull, England (says the Dominion). The following were controlled prices as on March 30th last: — '

Sausages, 2s per lb,; steak 2s 2d per lb.; bullock beef, Is 8d per lb.; suet, Is 4d per lb.;- stewing meat, Is 4d per lb.; ham, 3s per lb.; bacon 2s fid per lb.; rabbits (skinned) Is 9d each; chickens 11s each.

Tea, 2s 8d per lb.; treacle Is per lb.; peas, 9c! per lb.; sugar, fid per lb.; soap 9d per lb.; cocoa, 2s fid per lb.; coal, 3s a bag (teipstone). Blankets, containing 50 per cent, of cotton, were costing from 33s fid to 47s fid a pair. Ladies' boots of the standard finality sold under control cost 21s a pair, and men’s boots 17s fid a pair. ‘

It. should bo understood, of course, that 'many of the articles mentioned in this list are rationed. There were four coupons on the meat card issued to an adult, and these coupons represented the amount of meat that could be purchased (if it was available) in one week. One coupon entitled the holder to buy 5d worth of butcher’s meat, or 10 oz. of rabbits, or 3 oz. of bacon, or 6 oz. of sausage. These are uncooked weights.
