AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING.

A CO-OPERATIVE STORE TO BE

OPENED LOCALLY

The meeting of all those intcrest-

ed in co-operation, convened by Mr * J. Hannah, and held in the Town Hall supper-room last night, w. r \s very largely attended, there being' about 2(10 preseni, including a number of ladies. Mr J, Hannah was voted to the chair, and explained that the meeting' was called for the purpose of discussing the advisability of starling a co-operative store in Poxton. He had interviewed a large number of residents, and the majority of these signified their willingness to lake up shares. He had invited Mr. A. 0. Hillier, of Shannon, to ho present, as he had been one of the promoters' of the re-cently-started co-operative store in Shannon, and would explain the system adopted in that town. Mr Hillier briefly outlined what had been done in Shannon, and explained the system of management of the store there. After some discussion it was decided, on the motion of Messrs Aitchison and Lockwood, that this meeting of citizens is in favour ol starting a co-operative store. The question of the amount of each share, and the number to he allotted to each shareholder, was discussed at length, and eventually the following motion was carried, proposed by Mr Stevenson, and seconded by Mr Hurley: “That the shares be £5 each, £1 of which is to be paid on application, £1 on allotment, and the balance at the rate of £1 per month; that one share only be allotted to each applicant.” The following provisional committee was elected to arrange prospectus and other details; -Mesdames Desmond and Small, and Messrs E. A. Fuller," J. Hurley, f. J. Mantell, Rowlatl, H. Chalk, J. W. Stevenson, S. E. Cowley, V. H.

Dawson, and Tuniiicliffc. Votes of thanks to Mr Hillier, and to the chairman, concluded the

meeting. At a meeting of the committee held subsequently, Mr-J. Hurley was elected chairman, Air M. H. Dawson secretary, and Messrs J. W. Stevenson and IV. H. Dawson joint treasurers.
