PENALTY FOR AIDING THEM
At the Magistrate’s Court, PalYnerston, on Thursday, before Mr W. G. K, Kenrick, S.M., the adjourned case against John Judd, Tokomarn, was continued. .Defendant! was charged that, being In possession of information relevant to the purposes of the Military Service Act, with respect to two reservists, William Shields and .Bernard Mulholland, he withheld the information on being required to disclose the same to Constable Condon.
After ho tiring evidence, the -Magistrate stiid it was not suggested that Mr Judd, sear,, had any com- 1 plicity in the affair. The fact Iha* defendant laid a brother at the front was all the. more reason why he should try to send help. It was also remarkable that he had volunteered himself, and yet had withheld information from the police which might assist the men to escape. AVe had a duly to perform to the men at the front, and he wanted it to he <dearly understood that it was the duty of everyone In inform Hie'police about military shirkers. The Act provided for a penally of £SO, but, considering the circumstances that defendant had volunteered himself, and had a brother at the front, he would be lined £2O am; 7s costs. »
Security for appeal on a point of law was. lixed at £lO and costs.
