Recently (he Dunedin Star took advantage of the visit, of the Rev. Howard Elliott to Dunedin to suggest, that lie should give some expression of regret to the public in regard to the allegations contained in the test letters sent by him through the Auckland (hist Office. To this Mr Elliott: has responded as follows ;
Sir. —I mu quite prepared to go Hie length your sub-leader of Tuesday last appears to suggest in ray expression of regret. 1 have from many platforms done so already. I deeply regret that use was made of reports and inquiries received which redacted on the morals of the Church of Rome in the letters written at my house to lest the object of the censorship of Box 912. I have always regretted the use of that material. It was done without thought, and without desire or intention to make public charges against either priests or mins. Further, I regret the public reference by myself to the matter.
Nothing that I may say or write will prevent some people stirring up what yon are pleased to term “the noisome pool”; but, so far as I am concerned, the matter is closed with this letter. Ido not propose to turn aside to this issue again, but to pursue the Avork of organising the Protestant Political Association to their full power in the interests of Protestantism and of the Dominion. —I am,etc.,
HOWARD ELLIOTT Dunedin, May 23.
