MAORIS AND CONSCRIPTION.
A BIG MEETING. Auckland, Yesterday." The decision of the Government to enforce conscription amongst the Maoris in the Waikato district was considered at a meeting of Natives at Waahi, near Huntly, on Sunday. There was a good attendance, those present, it is stated, numbering 500 or 600. It is stated on good authority that it was decided that those present would have nothing whatever to do with conscription. The Medical Board had appointed a sitting to be held at Huntly on Monday for the purpose of examining those Natives whose names appeared in the recent ballot list. Only five Maoris presented themselves for, examination. These men are employed at Pukemiro Colleries, and by reason of their occupation they arc entitled to claim exemption.
