DANISH <SHIP TORPEDOED,
According - to a Copenhagen report, the Danish steamer Randelsborg was torpedoed between Cape Lindesnaes and the Skaw —that is to say, outside the German danger zone —and the captain was taken as a prisoner to Germany. All the food on board was seized. The Germans.promised to tow’the ship’s boats to Norway, but left the crew to their fate. CALLED UP ELEVEN TIMES. When John Henry Hall was stopped by a policeman at Barrow for the purpose of examining his registration card, he was found to possess no fewer than 11 calling-up notices issued between August, 1915, and February of this year. One of the notices warned him that lie would be arrested if he did not join up. Hall was fined £4O and handed over to an escort.
WATERING-PLACE SUFFER S. Karlsbad’s season for 1918, according to the Vienna Zeit, is likely to be a dead one, owing to the lack of food and of transport facilities. The Mayor of Karlsbad says he fears the closing down of the resort will bo exploited in the Entente countries as a sure sign of Austria’s straits.
GERMANY’S LOST COLONIES. Dr. Solf, the German Colonial Minister, speaking at Cologne, declared that a lasting peace was only possible if Germany’s lack of colonics was taken into consideration more fully than, hitherto. After the war the colonial possessions of the different countries must ho regulated on a just scale, which would take into consideration Germany’s wants. GERMAN WOMEN REBUKED. A no!ice issued by the Frankfurt authorities states that women living in houses adjacent to camps of officer prisoners of war “have repeatedly attempted to enter into communication with the imprisoned officers, and even to throw them things.” In future such conducf, will be visited by very severe legal peualties and public exposure. FISH LUMPERS’ STRIKE. A large section of fish clock workers, known as lumpers, went on strike at Grimsby in consequence of an alleged breach of agreement by the fishing vessel owners. They refused to discharge cargoes of fish from trawlers. Their grievance was that the weighing of the fish should have been part of their work under the wholesale prices order. The naval authorities took the matter in hand, and the cargoes were discharged by mine-sweepers. JOURNALIST DECORATED. One of the best known of the Italian war correspondents, Signor Achille Benedetti, of the Giornale d’ltalia, has received the Italian Military Medal for valour. While present at an attack on a strong enemy position under heavy fire, he drew the attention ‘ of a machinegunner to an attempt by a party of the enemy to cut off a body of the Italian assaulting troops. He already held the silver medal for valour for volunteering to carry an important message under lire.
