MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
The following district appeals were dealt with at Palmerston N&rl'h by the First Wellington Military Appeal Board, which concluded its sittings yesterday A RETURNED SOLDIER. ■James Davey, Himatangi (Mr W. L. Fitzherbert) appealed for his son, Gunner William Davey (a returned soldier). Appellant said he had enlisted with the 2nd Reinforcements. He served throughout Gallipoli and in France. He had five brothers —three at the front. His father had a farm at Himatangi of 320 acres. He asked for exemption from further service to assist his father. He had been wounded twice and gassed once. * To the chairman: He was back on duty furlough, and had been granted 29 days’ sick.leave on account of trouble recurring through his being gassed. 'James Davey, father, said he had a family of eleven; five children 12 and under. All his eligible sons had gone to the war. He had a property of 317 acres leasehold, with 18 years to Wun. He had milked 40 cows before the war. About 12 months'ago he bad hurt his knee while ploughing, and had not been able to Oo much work since. It was a difficult place to keep in repair, and there were pretty exacting covenants in connection with tho lease. To Captain McDonnell: ’fhe appellant had been working on the farm until he had enlisted. The Board, decided to recommend* appellant for t a month’s leave, John Mitchellj Shannon, appealed for his farm assistant, Kenneth Mitchell. Appellant said he had a mixed farm of 600 acres, carrying 800 sheep, and 100 head of cattle. Kenneth Mitchell, his son, was his only asistant. He asked for leave for the boy for two months until a lad he had on the farm became sufficiently experienced. Leave was granted until Julie 18. The appeal of Kenneth T. Easton, farmer, Foxton, ■ Was adjourned pending further information. • The appeal of Henry Brown, labourer, Oroua Downs, was adjourned until the next sitting of. the Board. Harold Edward Hook, hairdresser, Shannon (MrH. R. Cooper), had arranged with a man to manage his business who could not take over for a month. He asked for a month’s leave to take stock and to instal the man.. Leave until July 3rd.
