Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1918. SCHOLARSHIPS.

OBJECTION is being taken by those interested in educational allairs to scholarships being hold by pupils in private schools at the discretion of the Minister for Education. Sir James Allen has stated that the Act was so amended during the time ho was Minister for Education to prevent education boards granting thiq privilege. He informed a press interviewer yesterday that there had been an unsatisfactory lack of uniformity in decisions when Education Boards had power to decide the question whether State scholarships could be tenable in private schools of a standard equal to that of public schools. He declared positively that some boards had allowed such scholarships to be held by pupils in private schools, and others had refused permission, but he did not think that any good purpose could be served by giving the names of the boards. The present Minister for Education has not granted any scholarships, and it is likely that the Act will be amended next session, making it illegal for State scholarships to be held in private or denominational schools.
