DANCE.

There was a very good attendance at the plain and fancy dress boll held in the Town Hall on Thursday night. • Visitors were present from Otaki, Levin and Himatangi. The prizes for the best fancy dresses were, awarded to Miss E. Kelly, “Indian princess,” first; Miss M. Kelly, “Nauijjjh girl,” second; Miss Healy, “Gipsy fortune teller,” third, and Miss L. Woodroofe, “America,” highly commended. The most original dress was that worn by Miss Turley, attired as the “Manawatu Herald,” and as was to be expected, this young lady was the cynosure of all eyes, Mr Barrett, “Pierrot,” was awarded first prize for the best) men’s fancy costume. All the winners were awarded medals. Miss E. Kelly and Mr Barrett won the waltzing competition. We were not supplied with a list of others who appeared in fancy dress, so are unable to name them. Mr M. Perrean made an efficient M.C., and the music was supplied by the Borough Band and Miss and Mr Lenihan. The promoter of the function, Mr Harold Smith, afforded all who participated with a pleasant social evening with considerable more cost to himself than to those for whom he catered. Mr Smith informs us that another dance will be held at an early date to assist the funds of the Borough Band.
