BROWN ROT. Mr E. H. Cunningham, orchard instructor, forwards us the following:— ■ , . Orchardists, are urged to take strong measures for-controlling brown rot (ripe rot) 'during the dormant season, and tofollow up the treatment as the season advances. For this purpose clean up the orchard as thoroughly as possible; and above everything else, gather and destroy all mummified fruit. Plow the orchard‘after the foliage Pas fallen, thoroughly covering all leaves, etc., and dig over those parts missed by the plow. * „ Spray with*a winter fungicide: lime-sulphur I—ls,1 —15, or preferably 8—6—40 bordeaux, when the buds show pink —not earlier. Apply thoroughly at a pressure of not less than 200 lbs. to the square inch (this is essential). Spray again when two-thirds or most of the blossoms have fallen, with I—l2o1 —120 lime-sulphur, or 81b. to 101 b. atomic sulphur to 100 gallons of water. The fruit should be well thinned, and all diseased fruit removed and destroyed. It is also advisable to keep the fruit well covered .with spray as it approaches the ripening stage, v .; - This treatment will . effectively control other fungus diseases attacking stone fruit trees; such as rust, shot-hole fungus, etc.
